Infant Car Seats

Infant car seats are specifically made for new born babies. Generally an infant car seat for sale can hold a baby of up to 20 pounds although this depends on the exact manufacturer’s instructions. In most cases a car seat made for infants is designed to be rear facing and cannot be used in a forward facing position although again, this depends on the manufacturer.

Although infant car seats are important they generally don’t last that long as your baby will outgrow them relatively quickly. Usually a baby car seat will last for anywhere up to 12 months although it could be much shorter than this depending on how fast he or she grows.

Some of the major brands of infant car seat include Graco, Safety 1st and Evenflo. The price of a seat for an infant will vary greatly depending on which model you buy and which manufacturer has designed it. Even so, you can usually buy a high quality one for under $100. Used or second hand infant car seats are often a great way to save some money.

Convertible Car Seats

A convertible car seat is a much more long term investment as they can be used from the age they are safe for right through until the child doesn’t need a seat anymore. Most convertible baby seats are built to be used in both forward and backwards facing positions and the one you should use depends on the weight of the child.

Unlike infant car seats a convertible seat cannot be used as a carrier. They aren’t that portable either. Convertible car seats with shields are also available.

Some of the main manufactures of convertible car seats include Britax, Evenflo and Cosco. Generally a convertible car seat will be a bit more expensive than an infant version although again this depends whether you buy an advanced model or not.

Booster Seats

Booster seats are usually used for toddlers and are designed to be used while forward facing. The minimum weight for a booster seat depends on the manufacturer’s specifications and it’s essential to read these before you decide on which one to buy.
